How much wrapping paper a roll actually covers

Roll dimensions translate into a usable number of parcels, if you know how to read them.

What this covers

  • Reading the dimensions
  • A working estimate
  • Measuring a parcel properly
  • Why width limits you more than length
  • Paper weight and how it folds
  • Kraft versus coated
  • Buying for an event
  • Storage between uses
  • Why we ship rolls in tubes

Reading the dimensions

Rolls are quoted as width by length, most commonly around seventeen inches wide by thirty to thirty-three feet long. The width limits the size of parcel you can wrap in one piece; the length determines how many you get. Both numbers matter and the width is the one that constrains you.

A working estimate

A standard seventeen-inch by thirty-three-foot roll covers roughly eight to twelve medium boxes, depending on overlap and how much you trim. Larger parcels and generous overlaps pull that towards the lower end. Planning on ten is a reasonable working figure.

Measuring a parcel properly

You need the girth plus a little: twice the width plus twice the depth, plus two or three inches of overlap. The paper width has to cover the length of the box plus enough at each end to fold. Doing this once for a typical parcel tells you whether a roll width will work.

Why width limits you more than length

Running out of length means buying another roll. Running out of width means the parcel cannot be wrapped in one piece at all, and joining sheets is always visible. If you regularly wrap large or deep boxes, check the width before the price.

Paper weight and how it folds

Heavier paper holds a crease, covers what is underneath and resists tearing at corners. Thin paper tears exactly where the tape goes and shows the box through it. For anything with sharp corners, weight is worth paying for.

Kraft versus coated

Kraft is strong, takes tape well and has a matte finish that suits a plain aesthetic. Coated and foil papers look richer and are less forgiving: they crack along folds and show every crease. Foil in particular needs a light hand.

Buying for an event

For a run of similar parcels, work out the paper needed for one and multiply, then add a margin of around twenty per cent for mistakes and awkward shapes. Running short mid-run and being unable to match the paper is the outcome to avoid.

Storage between uses

Rolls stored upright slump and crease at the bottom, and that is where most wasted paper comes from. Flat storage keeps them straight. A dedicated container is genuinely useful if you keep more than two or three rolls.

Why we ship rolls in tubes

A crease across a sheet cannot be pressed out, and it lands exactly where the fold of the parcel will be. Rolls leave here in a tube rather than folded for that reason alone; it costs more to pack and it is the difference between usable paper and disappointment.

How this applies when you are buying

Rolls stored upright in a corner slump and crease at the bottom, which is where most wasted wrap goes. Flat under-bed storage keeps them straight and keeps ribbon with the paper it matches. Check the container length against your longest roll before buying.
