Tissue, shred and cellophane: what each is actually for

Three materials that get used together and solve three different problems.

What this covers

  • Filler stops movement
  • Filler also creates height
  • Crinkle shred versus tissue
  • Tissue as a separator
  • Cellophane wraps the whole thing
  • Clarity and thickness
  • Sizing a cellophane sheet
  • Colour choices
  • Quantities and storage

Filler stops movement

The primary job of any filler is to prevent contents shifting in transit. Movement is what breaks things and what makes a package feel cheap when opened. Enough filler that the contents cannot rattle is the practical test, and it usually means more than looks necessary.

Filler also creates height

The second job is presentation. Contents sitting at the bottom of a box read as sparse; raised on a bed of filler they fill the opening. This is why gift baskets use so much of it, and it is a legitimate reason to add more than the protective minimum.

Crinkle shred versus tissue

Crinkle-cut shred holds its loft under weight and springs back, which makes it the better structural filler. Tissue compresses and is better as a wrapping layer between items or as a soft top covering. Using tissue where shred belongs produces a package that settles flat within a day.

Tissue as a separator

Tissue between items prevents scuffing and stops colours transferring. It is also what creates the small moment of unwrapping inside the box. Acid-free tissue is worth seeking out for anything that will be stored for a long period.

Cellophane wraps the whole thing

Cellophane is for enclosing a finished arrangement or basket, gathered and tied at the top. It protects in transit and holds the contents in position. It is not a padding material and using it inside a box adds nothing.

Clarity and thickness

Cellophane is sold by thickness, commonly quoted in mils. Thicker film is stiffer, holds a gathered shape better and tears less. Thin film is cheaper and crumples. For a large basket, thicker film is what stops the whole arrangement collapsing when lifted.

Sizing a cellophane sheet

The sheet needs to be wide enough to come up all sides and gather comfortably above the contents. Underestimating leaves a gap that has to be taped. Large jumbo sheets exist precisely because baskets are consistently bigger than people estimate.

Colour choices

Shred and tissue come in a wide colour range and are the cheapest way to set a scheme. A neutral box with coloured filler reads as deliberate; a coloured box with clashing filler does not. Choosing filler colour before box colour is usually the easier order.

Quantities and storage

All three compress for storage and expand in use, so a pack looks smaller than it performs. Shred in particular is sold by weight and a few pounds goes a long way. Keep them dry, as damp tissue and shred both go limp and never fully recover.

How this applies when you are buying

Filler does two jobs: it stops contents moving in transit and it raises them so the box looks full when opened. Crinkle shred holds its loft better than tissue under weight. Cellophane is for wrapping the whole arrangement once it is built, not for padding inside it.

Tissue sheets, crinkle-cut shred and cellophane for basket filling and for protecting what is inside a box.
